Wawasan needs room to influence PN’s policies, say analysts

Political analysts in Malaysia have suggested that the multiracial Wawasan party can help the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition adopt a more moderate image, potentially aiding PN in capturing the federal government in the next general election. Wawasan, led by opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin, distinguishes itself from other PN component parties, particularly the Islam-driven PAS, through its moderate, middle-ground approach.

Tawfik Yaakub, an analyst from Universiti Malaya, emphasized that Wawasan must translate this approach into actionable policies on key issues such as job opportunities, housing, education, governance, and living costs. For Wawasan to attract moderate voters, PN must provide the party with genuine opportunities to shape the coalition's narratives and proposed policies.

Awang Azman Pawi from Universiti Malaya added that Wawasan could help PN attract moderate Malay voters, professionals, young urban voters, and even some non-Malay voters. However, he stressed that Wawasan must demonstrate its own distinct identity and not merely serve as a superficial component to enhance PN's moderate image, especially given that PAS leads the coalition.

Wawasan secretary-general Saifuddin Abdullah had previously stated on August 28 that the party intended to support PN's success in the next general election through a legal and morally grounded approach. As a recently formed part of PN, Wawasan, previously known as Parti Cinta Malaysia, underwent a rebranding effort under Zainudin's leadership.

Its founder, Huan Cheng Guan, retains a position as a Wawasan vice-president. With PN's incorporation of Wawasan, analysts view the party as poised to replace Bersatu's former moderate, Malay-dominated role within the coalition, following Bersatu's separation from PAS.
