Wadala Construction Site Death: Contractor Booked After 37-Year-Old Man Dies In Lift Shaft Fall

In the early hours of Thursday, a 37-year-old man named Sanjay Limbunas Minz tragically lost his life after falling into a lift shaft at a construction site in Wadala, Mumbai. The Matunga police have since filed a case against the contractor, K. V. Nair, for allegedly causing the death through negligence.

The construction of the Trimukh Shantikunja building had commenced in December 2024, with Tridhatu Renovators Pvt. Ltd. as the developer. Nair was responsible for providing labor at the site, while Budhdev Bishnupatra Santra served as the construction supervisor. Minz had recently arrived in Mumbai from his village on September 9 and visited the construction site at around 6.30 pm to meet his nephew, Prakash Charles Bakhla, who had been working as a fitter at the site for the past two years.

After dinner near Wadala Gate No. 4, the group, including Minz and his two friends, proceeded to the sixth floor of the under-construction building. They spent time chatting and eventually went to sleep. At approximately 1 am on September 10, a worker who had taken residence on the lower floor discovered Minz injured inside the lift shaft. He was swiftly taken out, and both an ambulance and the police were called to the scene.

Minz was rushed to Sion Hospital, where he was admitted to the casualty department around 3.08 am. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at around 3.45 am. The police, based on Bakhla's complaint, have registered a case under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Nair, alleging that the contractor failed to ensure proper safety measures for the workers, resulting in the fatal accident. Further investigation is currently underway.
