UNGA holds special session to honor memory of HH Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani

On May 10, 2017, the United Nations General Assembly convened a special session to honor the memory of HH the Late Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani. The session, chaired by President Khalilur Rahman, featured tributes from various world leaders and representatives of regional groups. Key speakers included the Permanent Representatives of Bahrain, Oman, Turkey, and Uganda, as well as the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

In his opening remarks, President Rahman conveyed heartfelt condolences to Qatar, its leadership, government, and people. He highlighted the 18-year reign of the late Amir, noting significant economic, social, and cultural transformations, particularly in education, science, knowledge, and human development. Rahman emphasized the Amir's emphasis on women's political participation, including expanded voting rights and electoral opportunities.

He also stressed the Amir's commitment to mediation over confrontation and dialogue over division. Rahman concluded by highlighting the Amir's legacy of development grounded in human dignity, which influenced Qatar's diplomatic and peace efforts worldwide.

Antonio Guterres, speaking on behalf of the UN, praised the Father Amir's leadership, stating that it established the foundation for Qatar's long-term prosperity and global standing. He explained that Qatar's influence extended beyond economic achievements, reflecting the country's contributions to peace, dialogue, and humanitarian efforts. Guterres stressed the UN's longstanding partnership with Qatar in supporting humanitarian initiatives, mediation, and multilateral action for peace and human dignity.

Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, speaking for the Gulf Cooperation Council, expressed deep sorrow at the passing of the Father Amir, recognizing him as an exceptional leader and architect of Qatar's modern renaissance. She highlighted his role in opening opportunities for Qatari women, granting them the right to vote and stand for election, and elevating them to senior leadership positions.

Al-Thani emphasized the Amir's vision for young people as the foundation of both the present and future, and noted the country's leadership in mediation and peaceful dispute resolution under his guidance. She cited several examples of Qatar's successful mediation efforts, including the Doha Agreement between Lebanese parties and the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.

Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council, honored the Father Amir for his devotion to Qatar and its people. He praised his belief in people, education, development, and institution-building, as well as his commitment to dialogue and international cooperation. Alrowaiei underscored the Amir's pioneering role in supporting GCC progress and joint action, and affirmed his support for regional security, peace, development, and stability.

The Sultanate of Oman's Permanent Representative also delivered a statement on behalf of the Arab Group, acknowledging the Father Amir's significant contributions to the region and the world.
