Under-construction bridge collapses in Bihar’s Vaishali, seven injured

Seven people sustained injuries when a portion of an under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar’s Vaishali district on Thursday, September 10, 2026. The bridge forms part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, a Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways initiative aimed at enhancing India’s road infrastructure. The mishap occurred near Itwaripur village under the jurisdiction of Lalganj police station during the process of constructing a four-lane bridge.

Upon learning of the incident, Vaishali Superintendent of Police Shubhank Mishra and Sub Divisional Police Officer Gopal Mandal visited the scene. Medical aid was administered to all the injured, with three victims subsequently referred to Sadar Hospital in Hajipur for further care. The police have directed authorities to investigate the incident and ensure the construction company adheres to safety protocols.

One worker was trapped under machinery for approximately an hour and a half, resulting in a fractured leg. Rescuers managed to free the individual using a gas cutter after a lengthy effort. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) also addressed the incident via its official X account, stating that the collapse occurred due to a technical failure in the launching girder system while a girder was being moved during the construction of the bridge on NH-139W in Hajipur.

NHAI emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of all workers and stakeholders involved in the project. Opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav blamed the state government, accusing them of tolerating substandard materials, poor quality work, inadequate inspections, and corruption within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leadership as primary factors contributing to ongoing bridge collapses in Bihar.
