UN chief warns of ‘grave consequences’ from Hormuz escalation

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned that the escalation near the Strait of Hormuz could lead to "grave consequences," according to a spokesperson on Wednesday. Concerns were raised about potential attacks on commercial ships and threats to maritime and energy infrastructure. The spokesperson emphasized the necessity of restoring and respecting navigational rights and freedom of navigation in accordance with international law.

Guterres urged all parties to engage in diplomatic channels and resolve disputes through dialogue and negotiations, emphasizing the UN Secretariat's readiness to support de-escalation efforts and a lasting resolution. The UN Secretariat's project services chief, Jorge Moreira da Silva, was leading consultations on a proposal to transport vital grain through the Strait, noting that progress depended on the parties' willingness to facilitate such a move.
