Ukrainian drones strike Makhachkala port and Sochi waterfront, satellite data points to new damage in Russia’s Arctic gas region

On September 10, Ukrainian drones targeted the commercial seaport in Makhachkala, Russia's Dagestan region, shortly after midnight. Residents began reporting explosions and air defense activity around the port. Independent outlet Astra analyzed witness footage and determined the commercial seaport to be the primary target. They also geolocated one of the explosions near Pushkin Street, where the Avar Theater is located.

The outlet published videos showing drones flying overhead and explosions, as well as smoke rising in the port area and damage in the city. Acting Dagestan head Fyodor Shchukin confirmed fires at the port and the Avarsky Theater. The theater's director, Magomed Bisavaliyev, stated a drone struck the building's roof, blowing out windows before a fire started. Shchukin reported the fires had been extinguished, with no casualties or injuries, and the theater's roof would be repaired.

Makhachkala's primary port, Russia's only ice-free, deep-water port on the Caspian Sea, handles a record 2.9 million metric tons of cargo annually. The attacks came alongside a maritime drone strike on Sochi, Russia's Black Sea city, injuring 28 people, including two children. Beach infrastructure and a section of the Primorskaya Embankment were damaged, and a concert by Russian singer Tatyana Bulanova was interrupted.

Russia's Defense Ministry reported intercepting over 440 fixed-wing drones in the south of the country and over the Black Sea.

New satellite data revealed possible damage to gas infrastructure in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, located over 2,000 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border. NASA's FIRMS detected thermal anomalies at the Urengoyskaya compressor station near Novy Urengoy Condensate Preparation Plant, which supports major gas pipelines. However, no separate confirmation of damage was provided by Ukrainian drone attack claims.
