Ukraine’s Zelenskyy to meet with Carney in Calgary, address cabinet in Banff

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Calgary this morning, before addressing cabinet members in Banff, Alta. Zelenskyy arrived in Calgary on Wednesday night after traveling through Iceland and Norway. Along with his wife Olena Zelenska, the Ukrainian leader is also set to visit Toronto and North Bay, Ont., before departing on Friday.

The meeting between Zelenskyy and Carney will focus on the shared priorities between the two nations, including strengthening defense, economic, and energy cooperation. Zelenskyy last visited Canada in December, where he stopped in Halifax as part of efforts to end the conflict that Russia initiated in 2014, which escalated into a full-scale invasion in February 2022. Kyiv has endured continuous Russian airstrikes in recent months, prompting Ukraine to seek more air defense support from its allies.

Canada has pledged $6.5 billion in military assistance to Ukraine, with the support running until 2029.
