Uber limits work from home to 1% following restructuring

Uber is limiting fully remote work to approximately one percent of its workforce following a massive workforce reduction, according to a memo sent to employees by CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. The company announced plans to eliminate about 3,300 jobs, the largest workforce reduction since the COVID-19 pandemic. Most remote employees will be required to move to an office, with only 1% of employees permitted to work fully remotely.

Khosrowshahi emphasized the importance of in-person collaboration, problem-solving, and the development of early-career employees in driving the decision. Uber will also establish clearer principles for where roles and teams should be based, concentrating employees in key hubs such as New York, San Francisco, and regional hubs. The restructuring aims to simplify Uber's organization, reduce management layers, and eliminate small teams with limited direct reports.

The company expects to reduce its management ranks by around 20% and cut the number of micro-teams by half. In Nigeria, Uber exited its ride-hailing operations in September after 12 years, facing changes in the local operating environment and competition from other mobility platforms.
