Trump pledges $5,000 ‘dividend’ to American adults if Republicans retain Congress

Former US President Donald Trump has announced a proposal to provide every American adult with a $5,000 payment, should Republicans maintain control of both chambers of Congress in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. During his address at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, Trump aimed to rally support for the party’s candidates.

The proposed dividend, which he termed as such, could potentially cost the US government around $1.3 trillion, covering approximately 260 million adults based on 2020 Census data. Trump urged the audience, "If the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000," as he delivered a two-hour-long speech. Separately, Trump claimed without evidence that his second term was financially the most successful in presidential history, despite many vulnerable Republican politicians avoiding the event.

He also spread fearmongering about potential consequences for the economy should Democrats gain control of the House or Senate for the final two years of his term.
