Trump administration proposes ending H-1B grace period after job loss

In a recent proposal, the Trump administration has suggested the end of a 60-day grace period for certain immigrants, including skilled workers on H-1B visas, to remain in the United States and seek a new employer after losing their job, as per a government notice published on Thursday. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Register, individuals with H-1B and other temporary work visas would be required to leave the country immediately upon the termination of their employment, potentially affecting major American tech companies that heavily depend on foreign workers.

This move is among the latest steps President Donald Trump has taken to restrict legal migration since his return to office in January 2025. The administration has also raised visa fees for skilled workers and temporarily halted immigrant visa appointments at U.S. missions worldwide while implementing a new training program. While the change may lead to some disruption for affected companies, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that American workers could be hired to fill the vacant positions.
