Transporters warn of protest over fuel price hikes

Karachi: All Pakistan Goods Transporters’ Alliance President Malik Shehzad Awan has criticized the federal government for multiple hikes in petroleum prices, warning that transporters may take to the roads if the agreed-upon government policies are not implemented. In a statement, Awan highlighted that frequent changes in diesel and petrol prices are adding pressure to the transport sector and the broader economy.

The increased fuel costs lead to higher transportation expenses, which in turn raise the prices of essential commodities, leaving people feeling the impact daily while businesses suffer and unemployment rises.

Awan expressed his concern that transporters do not wish to be forced into daily adjustments in freight charges due to persistent fuel price volatility. He urged the petroleum minister to review the government’s policy, warning that an ineffective fuel pricing strategy could create additional hurdles for the government. Awan reminded that during a nationwide strike by transporters in August, the petroleum minister had promised that fuel prices would not be altered daily.

According to Awan, diesel prices surged by Rs23 per liter, and petrol prices rose by Rs25 per liter over the last 18 days. The federal and provincial governments must adhere to the agreements reached with transporters during nationwide strikes in December and August. While some demands have been accepted and are being implemented, most remain pending, Awan stated, calling for swift action on outstanding demands.
