Supreme Court questions FSSAI on thresholds for ‘high’ sugar, salt, fat warnings

President John Dramani Mahama has charged Ghana's three newly sworn-in Supreme Court Justices to uphold the Constitution and administer justice impartially, without any influence of fear, favor, affection or ill will. During a ceremony at the Jubilee House on September 10, 2026, President Mahama emphasized that the justices must possess sound judgment, personal integrity, intellectual courage, and patience as they take on their responsibilities on the nation's highest court.

He stressed that the authority of the Supreme Court stems from the trust and confidence of the Ghanaian people, and it should be maintained by deciding cases independently and strictly in accordance with the law. President Mahama cautioned the justices to remain unswayed by political interests, public pressure, praise, or criticism, especially in emotionally charged cases.

He reminded them that every case before the court affects the rights, livelihoods, freedoms, and futures of individuals, urging them to approach matters with humility, patience, and courage. The President urged the justices to protect constitutional rights, uphold the separation of powers, and ensure no entity is above the law. President Mahama also called for improvements in the efficiency and accessibility of the justice system, warning that prolonged cases and delays could erode public confidence and cause hardship for citizens.

He urged the judiciary to embrace technology and reforms to deliver timely and accessible justice regardless of a person's income, status, or location. The President described the Supreme Court as a critical pillar of Ghana's constitutional democracy, responsible for giving meaning to the Constitution, settling national matters, and shaping laws.

He congratulated the three new justices and urged them to serve with wisdom, integrity, and independence, promising that their service would contribute to strengthening Ghana's democracy and the rule of law.
