Supreme Court oath is ‘consequential, not ceremonial’ – Mahama tells new justices

President John Mahama addressed the newly sworn-in Supreme Court Justices, emphasizing the weighty responsibility that comes with their oath of office. In his remarks at the swearing-in ceremony, he stated that the Justices have assumed one of the most demanding positions within Ghana's constitutional democracy. President Mahama highlighted the significance of the oath, declaring it "consequential, not ceremonial," and a solemn commitment to the people of Ghana.

He urged the new Justices to dispense justice without bias or favoritism, and to uphold the principles outlined in the 1992 Constitution at all times. President Mahama further explained that the Supreme Court's authority is derived from the trust and confidence of the Ghanaian populace, rather than any political backing. He outlined the qualities the Justices should embody, including sound judgment, personal integrity, intellectual courage, patience, and an unwavering dedication to justice.

The President also charged the new justices to safeguard constitutional rights, maintain the separation of powers, and ensure that no individual or institution operates above the law. President Mahama congratulated the new justices on receiving parliamentary approval, recognizing the dedication of their families, colleagues, and mentors throughout their careers.

The three new justices in attendance were Justice Sophia Rosetta Oduokouan Bernasko-Essah, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, and Anthony Forson Jr.
