Start nach zwei Jahren Pause: Prager Seilbahn fährt wieder: Hier gibt's eine Top-Aussicht

After a two-year construction period, the popular Prag Seilbahn, a cable car on the Petrin hill in Prague, is back in operation. The trial service with passengers begins on September 22nd, the transportation company of the Czech capital announced. Departure is at 7 AM, with the carriages running until 10:15 PM. Passengers can look forward to new fourth-generation vehicles with an improved view.

The journey starts at the Ujezd valley station and ascends to Petrin, also known as Laurenziberg in German. The vertical difference is approximately 130 meters, offering a breathtaking view of Prague, the "Golden City with a Thousand Towers". The interval between each trip will be ten minutes throughout the day. Before the complete renovation, around one and a half to over two million passengers used the cable car annually.

The two new cable car vehicles are custom-made by the Austrian-Swiss Doppelmayr-Garaventa Group. Their rounded design was the work of a young Czech product designer, Anna Maresova. The design features more glass surfaces, promising an even better view. Capacity also increases from 100 to 120 passengers. Additionally, the entire trackbed and support pillars over a length of half a kilometer have been renewed.

In September 2024, operations were suspended due to heavy rainfall causing the hill to become unstable. The total cost for track reconstruction and vehicles amounts to about 11.2 million Euros. The ticket price rises from roughly 2.50 Euros to about 4.10 Euros. Normal single tickets are not valid. For budget-conscious travelers, purchasing the ticket through the smartphone app "PID Litacka" saves about 40 cents.

The cable car serves as a starting point for many famous landmarks. Since its opening in 1891, more than 80 million passengers have used the Prag Seilbahn. The hill offers additional attractions such as a more than 60-meter-high observation tower - a replica of the Paris Eiffel Tower - a mirror cabinet, a rose garden, and a walk along a 14th-century city wall through the Strahov Monastery garden leading to the Hradschin with Prague Castle.
