Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Recap and Review - The Once and Future Captain Kirk

Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4, Episode 8, “Orders of Magnitude.” In this installment, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and his away team are left planet-bound and out of communication range, leaving the legendary Admiral Simon Reedger (Terminator 2's Joe Morton) to take command of the Enterprise. Reedger unveils a plan to locate a mysterious, cloaked enemy vessel responsible for the Vardan Massacre, which claimed 5 million civilian lives.

He tracks the enemy ship using gamma ray burn-off from its impulse engines. However, Reedger assumes temporary control of the ship, and Kirk (Paul Wesley), the son of Reedger's former First Officer, must serve as the ship's First Officer.

Joe Morton does a great job portraying Reedger, a respected and awe-inspiring figure who commands the crew's admiration. As Reedger's plan becomes more questionable, the crew follows his orders, demonstrating their devotion to the Admiral. Reedger's family was among the 5 million lost in the Vardan Massacre, which raises the question of whether his actions justify wiping out 5,000 people on the planet where the enemy vessel is hiding. Kirk cannot reconcile this decision, leading to conflict with Reedger.

This episode brings back the familiar theme of a commander's questionable decisions putting the crew in a moral dilemma, a premise that Star Trek has explored in various episodes. We've seen similar scenarios in classic Star Trek, such as Commodore Decker's confrontation with the planet killer in "The Doomsday Machine" or Captain Ben Maxwell's near-trigger in "The Wounded."

Here, we learn that Reedger's family was among the casualties, and even George Kirk, Reedger's former First Officer, gained glory in the Battle of Zeta Reticuli, while Kirk's career stalled.

Kirk's unwillingness to comply with Reedger's plan, driven by his father's past experience, adds depth to the character. However, the episode's biggest disappointment lies in the "cordrazine cop-out" twist, as Doctor M'Benga claims to have drugged Reedger, but it's revealed that Kirk was the one who administered the drug. This leaves the audience questioning whether the attack should have proceeded as Reedger planned or not. The crew's decision to take the easy way out results in a disappointing resolution.
