Shopify Brings On Tailwind Labs Team to Drive Custom Storefront Push

Shopify has announced the acquisition of Tailwind Labs, a website template business, to drive its custom storefront push. Tailwind Labs founder and CEO Adam Wathan announced the news in a blog post on September 9. Tailwind Labs' framework is installed over 110 million times weekly and powers products like ChatGPT, X, Cloudflare, Reddit, and Shopify.

Wathan stated that joining Shopify will provide Tailwind with a stable long-term home where it can be actively maintained for millions of users who rely on it. Shopify President Harley Finkelstein echoed Wathan's sentiments, noting that Shopify was an early adopter of Tailwind at scale, which now processes half of the internet's traffic.

Under Shopify, the Tailwind team will assist merchants in designing and hosting custom storefronts, managing sales and inventory, and providing a seamless shopping experience. Tailwind's open-source projects, such as Tailwind CSS, will continue to be maintained with support from Shopify. However, new customer sign-ups for Tailwind will be discontinued.

Shopify's revenue grew by 34% year-over-year in the second quarter, and the company has been expanding its offerings, including local payment options in Mexico, native B2B capabilities, and AI toolkit integration for enhanced commerce.
