Scene changes but plot remains: All Blacks and Springboks resume ‘Greatest Rivalry’ in Baltimore

Richie Mo’unga will take his place as flyhalf for the All Blacks in the Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry (RGR) finale against the Springboks at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, USA. This marks his first Test appearance since the 2023 World Cup final, where he played but lost. He made Japan his home after the final, making him ineligible for selection due to eligibility rules.

However, he re-joined the All Blacks and Crusaders before the World Cup in Australia, eventually being called up for the RGR squad as a late addition. Mo’unga began as flyhalf in a recent tour game against the Lions but has struggled to break into the Test team with Ruben Love’s preference.

New coach Dave Rennie opts for eight changes in the starting XV, bowing to the 2-1 series deficit. Veteran hooker Codie Taylor returns as captain, following injury-enforced absence of Ardie Savea, with the latter replaced by Mo’unga. A new front row features Fletcher Newell and Ethan de Groot, who aim to withstand the Springbok pack.

De Groot and lock Josh Lord return after a head clash saw them sidelined for the next two Tests. Ethan Blackadder makes his first start, replacing first-time starters Quinn Tupaea (injury) and Patrick Tuipulotu. Josh Moorby replaces Leroy Carter on the left wing, while experienced duo Rieko Ioane and Beauden Barrett are set to make their impact from the bench.
