Saudi Arabia announces major public holiday later this month

Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has stated that the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey could become effective if the Yemen conflict spills over into Saudi Arabia. During a television interview, Asif emphasized that the agreement is a collective defence arrangement, in which aggression against one member is considered aggression against all three.

He affirmed that the pact would be implemented in the case of unprovoked aggression or the spillover of the Yemen conflict into Saudi Arabia. Asif reiterated Pakistan's commitment to the agreement and its readiness to provide assistance if the situation demanded. The minister's comments followed attacks by Houthi rebels in southern Saudi Arabia, which resulted in over 70 injuries and damaged energy infrastructure.

Asif noted that the three signatories had assessed their capabilities and did not intend to respond to aggression with aggression but rather aimed to serve as a deterrent through the defence pact. He highlighted Pakistan's long-standing relationship with Saudi Arabia and support during challenging times, including in 2014 when the Yemen conflict escalated.

Asif expressed optimism that the situation would de-escalate and the Houthis would refrain from extending the Yemen conflict into Saudi territory. He also stated that Pakistan hoped for a resolution to the ongoing US-Iran standoff, acknowledging the negotiations were at a stalemate but noting that indirect engagement was still ongoing.

Asif emphasized Pakistan's precarious position due to its close ties with countries on both sides of the conflict and emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the region.
