Russian strike on Ukraine shopping centre kills at least six

At least five people were killed and nearly 70 others wounded when a Russian strike hit a shopping centre in Pavlograd, central Ukraine on Thursday. The attack occurred as both sides intensified long-range barrages on each other's positions, targeting civilian sites along with factories, refineries, warehouses and ports. According to UN-verified statistics, civilian deaths in Ukraine are at their highest rate since Russia's invasion in February 2022.

The Russian attack targeted a shopping centre in the city centre during broad daylight, with Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi confirming five deaths and 67 injuries, including eight children. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga termed it "deliberate terror against civilians." Russia's strategy involves attacking places where civilians gather to maximize casualties and spread fear.

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia's Belgorod region killed one person and wounded six others. President Zelensky suggested possible peace talks in the month, but the Kremlin stated it was too early to discuss dates. Canada pledged support for Ukraine's air defences and drone replenishment, signing a hundred-year partnership deal with the country.

Canada offered CAN$350 million, while Washington aims to revive stalled efforts for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
