Road, Restaurants And Structures Found Near Kaliasot FTL During Day 5 Of Bhoj Wetland Survey In Bhopal

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh: Ground-truthing of the Bhoj Wetland’s boundaries and Full Tank Level (FTL) on the fifth day of the survey has uncovered several concerns. A special team, appointed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), discovered permanent structures, commercial establishments, and a road within or near the Kaliasot water-spread area.

The NGT team began their inspection around 11 am near WALMI, comparing old FTL boundary markers with the current water level. Water Resources Department officials confirmed the positions of the boundary stones. In Khudaganj village in Ward 26, water was found flowing beyond multiple existing FTL markers. The team also noted restaurants and other structures close to the wetland boundary.

The most significant discovery was a road traversing the Kaliasot catchment zone. This area had several restaurants and commercial structures located within or adjacent to the wetland. Boundary markers being installed for land plotting raised concerns over potential obstruction of natural drainage and water flow. "Ground-truthing must accurately establish old markers, actual water levels, FTL, and natural water flow to prevent technical loopholes from being exploited," stated petitioner Rashid Noor Khan.

The Kerwa survey was halted due to the reservoir not reaching its FTL, as ongoing bridge construction has led to continuous water outflow. A report on Kerwa’s FTL and related technical aspects will be submitted to the NGT by September 15, following which further survey work will be carried out as directed by the tribunal. MP Pollution Control Board regional officer Nitesh Chaurasia confirmed that Kaliasot ground-truthing was complete, and further action at Kerwa would be determined by the NGT.
