Ramapo College shooting reports: Alert for ‘armed individual’ on campus; what we know so far

On Thursday afternoon, an alert was issued regarding an armed individual on the Ramapo College campus in Mahwah, New Jersey, causing alarm of a shooting and potential active shooter situation. However, the Mahwah Police Department later declared the reports to be "unfounded." The campus remained on lockdown as the investigation proceeded.

The Mahwah Police responded to the college around 6 PM, following a report of a party with a weapon. The campus lockdown persisted as officers conducted searches in multiple buildings as a precautionary measure. Ramapo College had instructed students to shelter-in-place at the alert, urging them to seek refuge in the nearest available room, lock or barricade the door, silence their cell phones, and avoid speaking until it was safe to do so.

Those not on campus were asked to stay away. No confirmed reports of shots fired have been received, despite the ongoing lockdown. Ramapo College of New Jersey, a public liberal arts college, spans over 300 acres of wooded land near the New Jersey-New York border and enrolls more than 6,000 students.
