Puteri Umno wishes Najib well ahead of expected clemency bid discussion

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — The women’s youth wing of Umno, Puteri Umno, today sent their best wishes to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak ahead of an anticipated discussion on his clemency bid. This came as a report by Free Malaysia Today indicated that the Federal Territories Pardons Board is set to deliberate on Najib's application during an upcoming meeting.

Puteri Umno chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi conveyed the group’s favorable sentiments during a press conference at the Umno General Assembly held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) today. "We hope all the best (for Najib). And we always prayed for the eased of everything," Amal stated. Amal engaged with local media following her keynote address at the Puteri Umno General Assembly at the WTCKL.

FMT had earlier reported that Najib's application was likely to be among the topics discussed at the board’s meeting, though the outcome remained uncertain—whether it would culminate in a decision or merely serve as a forum for discussion. Additionally, FMT reported that Najib might be eligible to serve the remaining portion of his sentence under house arrest, though it was unclear if this option would even be considered during the meeting.

Najib, 72, was found guilty of misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International and was sentenced to 12 years in prison, alongside a RM210 million fine. He commenced his prison term at Kajang Prison on August 23, 2022. Subsequently, the Pardons Board reduced his prison sentence to six years and lowered the fine to RM50 million.

On December 22 of the previous year, High Court judge Alice Loke dismissed Najib's plea to serve the remainder of his reduced sentence under house arrest; Najib subsequently withdrew his appeal against this decision.
