PTA Can Now Conduct Surprise Inspections of Telecom Equipment

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) now has the authority to conduct unscheduled inspections of telecommunications equipment facilities, as per the newly enacted Telecommunication Equipment Standards Regulations, 2024. These inspections can be carried out by authorized PTA officers at the premises of licensees, manufacturers, and importers to ensure the telecom equipment adheres to the required technical, safety, and performance standards.

The inspection scope encompasses equipment that is imported, manufactured, or assembled within Pakistan.

During such inspections, PTA officers have the authority to thoroughly examine the telecommunication equipment present at the site. They can also demand relevant records and documents from the implicated company or organization. Compliance with PTA inspections is mandatory for licensees, manufacturers, and importers, who must provide the requested information and maintain updated records of their telecommunication equipment for a minimum of three years.

These records must be made accessible to PTA upon request for inspection or compliance verification.

The regulations cover an extensive array of telecom equipment, including mobile devices, base stations, wireless systems, satellite communication equipment, optical equipment, and other telecommunications infrastructure. The introduction of these inspection powers is part of the regulatory framework aimed at confirming that telecom equipment operating in Pakistan complies with the technical and safety requirements stipulated by the PTA.
