PM Shehbaz to highlight Pakistan's efforts to end US-Iran war at UN General Assembly

Bangladesh has taken on the presidency for the upcoming 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is set to formally commence in New York. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is slated to address the assembly on September 25, with the conflict between the United States and Iran expected to dominate much of the deliberations during the week-long session running from September 22 to 26.

The theme for the session is 'Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All', with world leaders expected to focus on security issues such as the Strait of Hormuz and regional stability. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian's attendance remains undecided, as Tehran is still reviewing the conditions imposed by Washington on Iranian delegation travel.

US President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak on the opening day, followed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's address on the 25th, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech on the 24th. India will be represented by its foreign minister on the 26th. Pakistan is expected to advocate for a diplomatic resolution to the US-Iran conflict during the assembly, and the UN Security Council is set to vote on September 17 to extend the mandate of the panel monitoring Iran sanctions, which expires on the same day.

The vote will likely spark a confrontation between the United States and its allies on one side, and Russia and China on the other, due to differing views on the continuation of the sanctions monitoring mechanism.
