Osun: Election petition withdrawal will save public funds, reduce tension – Adegoke

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kunle Adegoke, has stated that withdrawing petitions challenging the 2026 Osun State governorship election will save public funds and reduce tensions. He believes that continued legal battles could keep the state in political uncertainty, distract the government from governance, and lead to increased hostility among supporters of rival parties.

According to Adegoke, an elected governor embroiled in a protracted legal challenge may become preoccupied with the dispute and less focused on their responsibilities. Furthermore, ongoing legal proceedings may leave ordinary citizens waiting for the outcome while political supporters could become increasingly anxious. The SAN highlighted the potential for violent elements to exploit political divisions and attack opposing party supporters.

He also recalled previous election disputes in Osun State, which were often marked by violence and destruction of property. Adegoke emphasized that political actors should be cautious about extending electoral disputes and that public resources should not be unnecessarily spent on managing the consequences of political disputes when a peaceful path is available.
