Nurse killed in helicopter crash had planned to leave flying doctor service to further studies

Jessie Paya Jok, a 44-year-old nurse, tragically lost her life in a helicopter crash involving a Flying Doctors Service aircraft in Long Lellang. Her close friend, Caroline Sawai Joseph Chungat, revealed that Paya had informed her that this month would be her final assignment with the FDS, as she planned to pursue an Advanced Diploma in Midwifery the following year.

Regrettably, Paya's dream of furthering her education was not realized. Caroline, who has known Paya since 2005, described her as a gentle, soft-spoken individual who always brought joy to those around her with her smiles and laughter. Paya's kindness and dedication were evident in her service at Bario Health Clinic, where she went above and beyond to help patients in need, even using her own funds to cover their travel expenses.

Another victim of the crash, Debra Moset, was also known for her friendly demeanor and ability to lighten the mood with her jokes. Both nurses had been colleagues since 2005, with Debra having served alongside Paya at Jambatan Suai Health Clinic for six years before being transferred. The helicopter involved in the crash, carrying five individuals including the pilot, tragically crashed near the Long Lellang STOLport, resulting in the loss of five lives - Jessie, Debra, pilot Captain Zainol Afiq Bee Sham, medical officer Dr. Ainul Baraah Kamaruddin, and medical assistant Alexson Adit Henry.
