The NTT administration is strengthening security measures at evacuation shelters following allegations of a sexual assault involving a teenager displaced by a recent earthquake. According to East Nusa Tenggara governor Melki Laka Lena, the provincial administration is working with various parties to enhance protection for women and children at evacuation sites throughout the province.

He emphasized that evacuation shelters should be safe havens for disaster-affected individuals, especially women and children, who require proper assistance and support during their stay. Melki stressed that the NTT administration will intensify monitoring and protection efforts not only in centralized shelters but also in communal shelters and independent evacuation sites, emphasizing that the safety of evacuees must remain the top priority.
