New Brunswick launches subsidized school lunch program amid rollout delays

New Brunswick has launched a provincewide subsidized school lunch program, providing meals for thousands of students at no cost to families. The program, funded with $26 million, has faced some delays, with approximately one in five schools still waiting for full service. The meal cost ranges from $4 for grades 1-8 to $5 for high school students, with the province subsidizing the remaining expenses for eligible families.

Victoria McKenzie, a parent at Hanwell Park Academy, has noticed her daughter eating a more varied diet thanks to the new program. Pam Campbell, a retired educator, emphasizes the importance of such support for financially strapped families. Currently, 80% of schools have implemented the program, but 56 cafeterias are experiencing issues such as equipment upgrades and inspections.

Premier Susan Holt attributes these challenges to a workforce shortage in installing the necessary equipment. Food for All NB, a non-profit organization, stresses that clear communication and family feedback will be crucial in maintaining consistent quality and access. The province aims to have all schools fully supported within a couple of weeks, offering contingency meals to students in need if necessary.
