Medical city planned for Ada • GTA, Africa’s Brain Bank partner to boost health tourism

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and Africa’s Brain Bank have joined forces to build a medical city in Ada, located in Ghana's Greater Accra Region. The goal of this ambitious project is to offer top-notch healthcare services to address the continent's dependence on foreign medical treatment. This historic medical city is set to provide a range of healthcare services, from primary to tertiary care, potentially turning Ghana into a medical tourism hub in Africa.

At the Ghanaian Tourism Authority's seventh Summit, Annual Charity Ball and Medical City Groundbreaking Ceremony, held in Accra, these organizations unveiled their plans during a ceremony with the theme, “Africa’s greatest wealth, its people; Restoring Africa’s health capital.”

Rev. Dr Pam Fomunung, the CEO and Global Chairperson of Africa’s Brain Bank Global, explained that the facility's state-of-the-art healthcare services would benefit both Ghanaian patients and those across the continent. She highlighted that the project would help retain a significant portion of the $7 billion spent annually by Africans seeking medical care abroad, with the aim of making Africa a global medical tourism destination.

Furthermore, Rev. Dr Fomunung underlined the importance of patient-centered care, ensuring that every patient is treated with respect regardless of their social or economic background.

Dr Michael K. Obeng, the President of Africa’s Brain Bank, called the project a "huge opportunity" for Ghana and Africa. He emphasized the need for African-led solutions to the issue of relying on foreign healthcare systems, stating that the Medical City would give Ghanaians and other Africans access to quality care without leaving the continent.

Mr Sam Uloho, the founder of Enklick Group and African Union Ambassador for Agenda 2063, expressed optimism that the initiative could encourage Africans living abroad to return to contribute their skills and resources to the continent's growth. Uloho urged the diaspora to support programs that channel their expertise and resources into development projects in Africa.
