Mahama calls for rebranding of Ghanaian football

President John Dramani Mahama has implored the Ghana Football Association, the Referees Association of Ghana and football club owners to raise the standards of Ghanaian football to make it more competitive on an international platform. He made this appeal during a visit by Medeama Sporting Club, the reigning champion of the Ghana Premier League and the 2026 Champion of Champions, Nations Football Club, and Ampem Darkoa Ladies Football Club.

President Mahama presented financial support to these teams, acknowledging the challenges they face, particularly unfair refereeing, which he believes undermines the competitiveness of the sport. He emphasized the need for neutral referees to ensure every match is a fair contest. The President also expressed concern over dwindling spectator numbers, attributing it to the perception that matches are pre-set, and proposed measures to improve the league's competitiveness.

He noted that football is a powerful tool for branding and urged the teams to strive for excellence to revitalize Ghana's reputation in club soccer. President Mahama commended the efforts of private individuals supporting the teams and highlighted the government's commitment to aiding soccer development through the Sports Development Fund, while also encouraging private sector involvement.
