MACC denies more Umno senior leaders will be arrested after 2026 assembly

When PAS delegates arrived at Umno's annual assembly at the World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur last night, the reception from Umno party members went beyond polite greetings. Some Umno delegates saw this as a sign that Malay-Muslim unity was regaining relevance, while others viewed it as a gesture of reciprocity for Umno representatives attending PAS's muktamar event last week.

However, even those who downplayed the symbolism acknowledged that the presence of PAS figures at the assembly held different weight this time, following cooperation between Umno and PAS-backed parties in Johor and Negri Sembilan, and as Melaka prepares to become the crucible for the next election.

Muhamad Ainnul Haziq Mohd Razlan, a 28-year-old Umno division member from Kepong, expressed his belief that Umno should continue pursuing Malay-Muslim political unity rather than treating it as a temporary slogan. He hoped that the top leadership would capitalize on this unity, which he saw as a very good development, especially among the youth.

Kepong Umno division member Muhamad Ainnul Haziq Mohd Razlan also pointed out that Umno Youth had invited PAS Youth representatives to their programs, describing the exchanges as a positive signal for potential cooperation leading up to the 16th general election. During the youth assembly, party youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh welcomed his PAS counterpart, Afnan Hamimi Taib, and described the attendance as the culmination of three years of discussions between the youth wings on national issues.

While some members were more circumspect, others were more explicit in their interpretations. Damansara Umno Youth committee member Muhammad Najeeh Norazam suggested that PAS coming to any party might be considered more or less a formality to celebrate the relationship, akin to how Umno used to invite Harapan to WTC to establish unity. However, he noted that the presence of PAS could be read as a symbolic indicator that both parties are working together, possibly hinting at the composition of the next election coalition.

Junaidi Ifdam Jun, a 32-year-old Umno member from Sabah, was more direct in his view, stating that the exchange of delegations demonstrated the seriousness both parties have about the broader agenda of Malay-Muslim unity.
