LAWMA arrests Lagos resident for allegedly dumping waste in drainage channel

The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has arrested a Meiran resident for allegedly discharging waste into a drainage channel during rainfall. This occurred after a video surfaced on social media depicting a woman transporting refuse from her residence and allegedly dumping it into a nearby drainage channel while it was raining.

LAWMA, along with the Kick Against Indiscipline and the Mobile Police, carried out the arrest. Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, LAWMA's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, announced this development in a statement on Thursday. Gbadegesin revealed that the arrest was prompted by a tip-off from the public, which allowed the enforcement team to swiftly address the alleged environmental transgression.

He applauded those who provided the information, calling it a display of responsible citizenship and support for environmental protection efforts. The arrested individual, a woman residing at No. 13, Lanre Adefiranye Street, Baale Bus Stop, Meiran, was apprehended during a joint operation involving LAWMA, KAI, and the Mobile Police.

Gbadegesin confirmed that she was caught while allegedly dumping waste into a drainage channel during rainfall. She has since been taken to the KAI headquarters for further investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law. LAWMA emphasized the importance of citizens reporting environmental violations and urged residents to adhere to the principle of "If you see something, say something," highlighting the collective responsibility in safeguarding the environment.

The Authority also stressed the dangers of improperly disposing of waste, particularly in drains, which can pose threats to public health, the environment, and Lagos' drainage infrastructure.
