KMA moves to save deteriorating Mayor’s residence with compulsory occupancy bye-law

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) recently passed a new bye-law requiring every appointed Metropolitan Chief Executive to occupy the official Mayor's residence. This decision came after Assembly Members noticed that successive chief executives had been consistently failing to stay in the residence, leaving it neglected and deteriorating.

The motion was moved by the Presiding Member, Patrick Kwame Frimpong, and approved unanimously by the House. Under the new rule, any Mayor who refuses to live in the residence could face a vote of no confidence, potentially leading to their removal from office. The Assembly stated that this law is now awaiting implementation and aims to protect and preserve state property.

The current Mayor, Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi, has already been residing in the residence during his tenure, which has helped preserve the structure. Frimpong praised the current Mayor's efforts and emphasized that mandatory occupancy will ensure the facility's proper maintenance. He also highlighted that without the current Mayor's intervention, the building would have likely collapsed.

The Mayor expressed appreciation for the Assembly's decision, calling it timely and necessary to safeguard state property. He noted that the residence had been left in a deplorable condition when he took office, with overgrown weeds, broken facilities, and years of neglect. The Assembly meeting covered various topics such as revenue, infrastructure, health, education, trade, and social welfare.

The Mayor presented an Authority Report detailing achievements and key issues over the first half of 2026. He pledged his commitment to transparency, accountability, discipline, and responsive leadership to serve the people of Kumasi.
