Jamestown waste evacuation to begin next week – Local Gov’t Minister

The evacuation of the massive waste pile-up at Jamestown is set to commence in the coming week, according to Ghana's Local Government Minister, Mahama Ayariga. Preparations for the transfer of the refuse to the Adepa Waste Management Centre in Nsawam are already underway, with trucks being summoned from across the nation to assist in the operation.

During an appearance on Accra-based Citi FM, Minister Ayariga revealed that regional coordinators have been brought to Accra to oversee the deployment of the trucks and ensure the waste clearance is completed within a one-week period, as mandated by the government. He also confirmed that he has briefed President John Dramani Mahama on the preparations and anticipates the President's official launch of the exercise once the necessary logistics are fully arranged.

Minister Ayariga expressed confidence in the timeline, stating, "By next week, I am very confident that the evacuation of the waste from the Jamestown site will start." He informed the President of his efforts to have the trucks on-site by next week, so the President can commission the exercise himself.

The evacuation is anticipated to alleviate the mounting sanitation crisis at Jamestown, where the unchecked accumulation of refuse has become a pressing issue for residents and authorities alike. According to Minister Ayariga, the mobilization of trucks from diverse regions is intended to furnish the necessary logistical capacity to clear the amassed waste within the designated timeframe.

This initiative is part of the government's larger strategy to tackle waste management issues in Accra and enhance sanitation in communities plagued by persistent refuse buildup.
