Iran, US hit tankers in biggest wave of attacks on shipping

The United States and Iran have engaged in a series of attacks on oil tankers near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, marking the most intense wave of shipping-related hostilities since the onset of their six-month conflict. This surge in attacks caused oil prices to soar, with benchmark Brent crude futures briefly surpassing $100 per barrel for the first time since July.

Tragically, at least one seafarer lost their life and another remains missing after the incidents. The tense situation escalated just a month after a period of relative calm, during which the US employed economic tactics to exert pressure on Iran. Iran claimed it had launched ballistic missiles at a US military base in Jordan, although Jordan reported successfully intercepting 18 missiles, while the remaining two crashed harmlessly in uninhabited regions.

An American official confirmed that all American personnel remained unharmed. In retaliation, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps vowed to intensify its response to any subsequent attacks, and hinted at the imminent release of maps delineating a broader, off-limits zone in the region extending to Chabahar on the coast near Pakistan.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump alleged that Iran was attempting to sway the outcome of the upcoming US midterm elections, a development which could potentially impact the Republican Party's control over Congress. He suggested that the war might conclude immediately following the election due to Iran's desperation to influence the event.

However, White House advisers privately expressed concerns to Trump that the conflict could persist well beyond his presidency, which concludes in January 2029. Additionally, fighting has intensified between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen, another theater of war that poses a threat to global energy supplies originating from the Middle East.
