Iran Shipping Update – September 9, 2026

On September 9, 2026, the U.S. imposed an "Economic D-Day" operation against Iran, targeting the Iranian regime's economy. The security situation in the Strait of Hormuz remained volatile, as Iran continued to target commercial shipping and Gulf States. In response, U.S. forces struck three Iranian crude oil carriers, permanently disabling two IRGC crude oil tankers, and disabled several others. The Houthis also declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabian ports, but no serious incidents were reported since August 24.

The Strait of Hormuz has seen 79 maritime incidents involving commercial vessels, resulting in 21 seafarer deaths. Since the Iran War began, about 883 vessels have transited the Strait of Hormuz, with the majority now using the northern corridor due to strikes on commercial shipping. U.S. forces have facilitated 1435 transits since June 20. Iranian oil-laden tankers have been clustering in anchorages along the Iranian coastline, with only five handymax-size tankers successfully passing the U.S. blockade line since July 12.
