IBIA Condemns Attacks on Commercial Shipping and Calls for Greater Protection of Seafarers

The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) has strongly condemned recent attacks on commercial shipping and called for heightened protection of seafarers. In the past 24 hours alone, these incidents have led to the loss of seafarers' lives, with others injured or still missing. IBIA's Global Board and Secretariat have conveyed their deepest sympathies to all those affected, offering condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims.

These unfortunate events serve as a stark reminder that seafarers, who are civilians performing an essential service to the global economy, continue to bear the human cost of geopolitical conflicts. IBIA unequivocally condemns attacks against commercial shipping and joins the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the broader maritime community in advocating for increased protection of seafarers and an immediate cessation of assaults on merchant vessels.

The IBIA's Board urges governments and the international community to take prompt action to prevent further loss of life, safeguard freedom of navigation, ensure the continuity of global trade, and uphold international law. Executive Director Alexander Prokopakis stated, "Seafarers are often the overlooked victims of geopolitical disputes in which they play no part.

I concur with IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez that attacks on innocent seafarers and civilian shipping are completely unacceptable. The men and women serving at sea are not complicit in these conflicts; they are responsible for delivering energy, food, and essential goods that keep economies and societies functioning. Seafarers are deserving of protection, respect, and the opportunity to carry out their duties without becoming targets."
