I remain fully committed to judicial independence – Mahama

President John Mahama has emphasized his unwavering dedication to maintaining judicial independence, emphasizing its crucial role in safeguarding citizens' rights. During a ceremony to welcome newly sworn-in Supreme Court Justices, Mahama highlighted that judicial independence is not a privilege bestowed upon judges, but rather a protective measure ensuring fair treatment for all individuals facing legal issues.

Emphasizing that judicial independence serves the citizens' interests rather than catering to the personal preferences of the judges, Mahama stressed that it is essential for the courts to determine rights fairly, even when the cases involve complex, unpopular, or politically sensitive matters. He stressed that while judicial independence is vital, it must be coupled with accountability, discipline, and adherence to the judicial oath.

Mahama highlighted that public confidence in the judiciary hinges not only on the quality of court decisions but also on the behavior of judges, the accessibility of courts, and the timely delivery of justice. He pointed out that prolonged cases, unnecessary delays, and delays in rendering judgments can erode public trust and potentially amount to a denial of justice.

The President encouraged the judiciary to implement reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency, adopting appropriate technology, and making justice more accessible to all citizens, regardless of their financial status, social standing, or geographical location. Mahama also urged the Supreme Court to communicate its reasoning in a clear and precise manner, asserting that well-articulated judgments would reinforce the law and foster public respect and trust in the judiciary.
