Hurricane Lowell knocks out a port in Hawaii that is one island's main source for food and fuel

Hawaii experienced significant damage from Hurricane Lowell, which struck the state on its western edge on Thursday. The storm caused at least two deaths and left thousands without power. In Kauai, intense winds and waves damaged oceanfront resorts, tore apart roads, and knocked out power. On Lanai, a harbor that supplies the island's food and fuel to its 3,300 residents was left inoperable, requiring about two weeks to repair.

The overall destruction may be comparable to Hurricane Iniki, which caused $3 billion in damage to Kauai in 1992. Governor Josh Green requested a major disaster declaration to expedite federal assistance for Kauai and Maui counties.
