HD Hyundai Heavy to bet $747 mil. in power-generation engine, SMR

Hyundai Heavy Industries plans to invest $747 million in expanding its capabilities in land-based power generation engines and small modular reactors (SMRs). This investment, reported in a recent regulatory filing, aims to bolster the company's presence in the artificial intelligence infrastructure market. The company intends to establish a new production base for power generation engines and a dedicated facility for producing SMRs.

For the HiMSEN engines, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will allocate 833.6 billion won to construct a new production base in Ulsan. This plant, with a production capacity of 3 gigawatts, will be situated on a 215,000 square meter site. Key facilities within the complex will include an engine assembly and testing plant, a crankshaft machining plant, and other essential production units. Groundbreaking for this new facility is slated for the first quarter of the upcoming year, with completion projected for May 2028.

Upon completion, the new plant is anticipated to contribute an additional 4 gigawatts of annual production capacity for land-based power generation engines. This expansion will complement HD Hyundai Engine, already operational in Yeongam, Jeonnam-Gwangju.
