Government vows firm action against threats to 2027 polls

The Kenyan government has pledged to bolster security and inter-agency coordination in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election scheduled for August 10, 2027. Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, the Prime Cabinet Secretary, emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring the safety of Kenyans, electoral institutions, and critical infrastructure throughout the electoral period.

Speaking during a meeting with the diplomatic corps, Mudavadi warned that anyone who threatens peace and security will face legal consequences, irrespective of their political affiliation or status. He reiterated that national security, peace, and stability are the government's top priorities before, during, and after the elections.

Mudavadi also stressed the importance of allowing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to carry out its constitutional duties independently and professionally, without interference from other stakeholders. He cautioned against any attempts to discredit the electoral body and urged all parties to respect and strengthen constitutional institutions.

"All of us have a responsibility to respect and strengthen our constitutional institutions. Democracy is sustained by strong institutions and respect for established rules and not by individual interests," Mudavadi stated.

The government is working towards ensuring a secure, free, and peaceful election by implementing initiatives such as the National Cohesion and Integration Commission's (NCIC) Roadmap to a Violence-Free 2027 General Election, known as Uchaguzi Bila Noma. Mudavadi, who is also the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diplomatic Affairs, urged diplomatic missions planning to send election observers to prepare early and adhere to IEBC requirements to facilitate timely accreditation.

He reminded them that those who may wish to deploy election observers are encouraged to prepare early to avoid inconveniences arising from non-compliance.
