Gibraltar reaffirms British sovereignty on National Day, first since UK-EU treaty

On the 10th of September, Gibraltar marks its National Day, commemorating the 1967 referendum where the majority chose to remain British instead of joining Franco’s Spain. Despite the end of the oppressive dictatorship, the territory has steadfastly remained British. During the political rally in Casemates Square, a sizable crowd gathered, though slightly smaller than previous years, taking advantage of the public holiday for weekend getaways. Business closures on Friday were common to accommodate the extra day off.

A diverse cross-party delegation, including MPs from all major parties, attended the event, alongside members of the House of Lords and former MPs who hold the Freedom of the City. The UK Minister for Europe, Lord Stewart Wood, arrived late due to flight disruptions, marking his first visit to the Rock for National Day. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo delivered an energetic speech, emphasizing that Gibraltar belongs to its people and cannot be altered by external forces. He announced it would be his last address as Chief Minister.

Picardo read aloud letters from King Charles and the UK Prime Minister, reiterating the UK Government’s commitment to Gibraltar, British sovereignty, and self-determination. Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia pointed out that this National Day is the first since the recent UK-EU treaty was signed. He clarified that the treaty does not contradict preserving British sovereignty or fostering good relations with Europe.

Garcia stressed that self-determination means Gibraltar’s future can only be decided by its citizens through free and democratic means. He assured that the principle of self-determination remains intact, unaffected by the treaty, closer ties with Europe, or the EU’s ongoing efforts to enhance citizens' well-being. The night concluded with a spectacular fireworks and drone formation display.
