Ghana has budgeted for 10 new multi-sport stadiums – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama announced that the Ghanaian government has budgeted for the construction of 10 new multi-sport stadiums across the country in the 2026 budget. The initiative aims to improve the nation's sporting infrastructure, particularly in regions without stadiums. During a courtesy call on Ghanaian champions Medeama SC, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies, the president reaffirmed the commitment to the project, which was outlined by Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams at the 32nd Ordinary Congress.

Mahama highlighted the shortage of modern sporting facilities in some regions, noting that even the six newly created regions lack stadia. He emphasized that the government had already allocated funds for the initiative, stating, "We have made allocations in the 2026 budget to start the construction of 10 new stadia."

Moreover, the president addressed the deteriorating condition of the Ho Sports Stadium, which would require extensive reconstruction rather than minor repairs. He explained that the new facilities would be designed to support multiple sporting disciplines, including football, athletics, basketball, and volleyball, rather than focusing solely on football.

Several existing Ghanaian stadiums are currently undergoing improvement works, including the National Sports Authority's suspension of domestic football activities at the Accra Sports Stadium to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Gabon later in the month. Renovation efforts are also ongoing at the Takoradi, Baba Yara, and Cape Coast stadiums, with minor refurbishments expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
