Five dead and 86 missing as ‘heartbreaking’ fire breaks out on Philippines ferry

At least five individuals have lost their lives and 86 remain missing following a devastating fire aboard a ferry in the Philippines, according to the country's coastguard. The MV June Aster, carrying 117 passengers and 17 crew members, was en route to the popular tourist destination of Coron when the blaze erupted. The fire, which ignited at 18:45 local time on Wednesday, continued to burn as of 11:00 on Thursday. Due to strong currents and dense smoke, firefighting efforts faced significant challenges.

A survivor, Roland Lerma, recounted his harrowing experience of floating in the sea for two hours before being rescued. He stressed the importance of timely rescue efforts, stating that a delayed response would have likely resulted in his death. Video footage released by the coastguard showed the burning vessel, along with people being pulled from the water into rescue boats.

The origin of the fire remains under investigation, but preliminary interviews with survivors suggest that it started in the cargo hold, where containers and goods are stored. Some passengers were not wearing life vests, according to the coastguard's observations. As of now, 43 people have been rescued, though the severity of injuries is still undetermined. Seven survivors were transported to a hospital in Culion, an island with more extensive healthcare facilities.

The coastguard received numerous accounts from witnesses, describing the disaster as "heartbreaking." A first responder emphasized that the country had never experienced such a catastrophe in the tourist hotspot of Coron. The ferry was only an hour away from its destination when the fire broke out. Those rescued were taken to an evacuation center in Barangay Turda, located north of Marcilla.

Rai Garcia, whose family friends are among the missing, expressed deep concern for their loved ones. Mae Lorraine Galera-Navoa, the sister of Garcia's brother-in-law, was traveling to Luzon to attend her father's funeral when the disaster struck. She was accompanied by her husband and their three-year-old daughter. The family has been actively seeking information about their missing relatives through local news and the Philippine Coast Guard's Facebook page.
