Fire on passenger ferry in Philippines leaves dozens missing and at least 5 dead

A fire erupted on a passenger ferry in the western Philippines, resulting in at least five fatalities and 87 people reported missing, according to the coast guard. The incident occurred on Wednesday near Coron, Palawan, on the MV June Aster. Rescue operations are ongoing, with 42 individuals successfully rescued so far. The ferry, carrying a total of 134 people - comprising 117 passengers and 17 crew members - was en route from Manila when the fire broke out.

Coast guard spokeswoman Commodore Noemie Cayabyab announced the grim toll in a radio interview. Images from the scene depict coast guard personnel distributing life jackets to survivors as the vessel burned. Small boats were utilized to transport survivors to safer shallow waters. Sea accidents are prevalent in the Philippines due to factors such as storms, poorly maintained vessels, overcrowding, and lax enforcement of safety regulations, particularly in remote provinces.
