Final Fantasy VII Revelation Director Explains Why the Physical Disc Version Requires a Download to Play

Final Fantasy VII Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi has addressed why the physical disc version of the game requires a download to play on PlayStation 5 and Xbox. Initially, Square Enix considered using the same disc size as the previous game, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. However, doing so would require compromising the game's quality.

As a result, the developers chose to release the physical disc with certain sections of the game as digital downloads. Hamaguchi acknowledged fan concerns but expressed satisfaction with the decision, stating that they were able to release a physical format of the game despite the market trend towards disc-less releases. The game is set to launch on April 8, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
