FG inaugurates committee to roll out electric buses for civil servants

Olumuyiwa Enitan Abel, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, has launched a nine-member committee to oversee the launch of electric buses for civil servants. The committee aims to develop a framework for the initial deployment of electric buses and ensure the scheme offers affordable, safe, and accessible transportation for workers.

During the inauguration in Abuja, Abel urged the committee to act swiftly, transparently, and responsibly, while removing any obstacles that might hinder the project. He revealed that the pilot phase will kick off with 10 electric buses on selected routes, followed by the full deployment of 100 buses for Federal Civil Servants. According to Abel, the pilot will offer valuable insights to enhance the scheme and guide the deployment of the remaining buses, with the ultimate goal of establishing a lasting staff transportation system for the Federal Public Service.

The committee's responsibilities include selecting appropriate routes for the pilot, creating a transparent enrollment and payment system, suggesting affordable fares, and implementing safety, security, and accessibility measures, including for individuals with disabilities. Abel expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his support of the scheme and praised the Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council, Otunba Oluwemimo Osanipin, and his team for their cooperation.

The committee is led by Dr Abdul Sule Garba, Permanent Secretary of the Service Welfare Office, with Nura Umar, representing NADDC, serving as Co-Chairperson. The electric buses were officially launched on August 26, 2026, as part of the Renewed Hope Transit Programme. Earlier, Abel also committed to enhancing collaboration between the Federal Civil Service and traditional institutions to foster national unity, strengthen governance, and improve public service delivery.

He made this pledge after receiving a delegation from the Ife Traditional Council, representing the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II. Abel emphasized that continued engagement with traditional institutions is crucial for advancing national development and building resilient public institutions.
