Family mourns death of loved one killed fighting in Ukraine

The family of a B.C. man who was killed while fighting in Ukraine has expressed their deep sorrow over his loss. James Bourgeois, 46, was killed on August 18 in the Donetsk region near the Russian border after a drone attack. His father, James Bourgeois, described his son as "brave" for his actions. Another comrade who was critically injured also died several days later.

Born and raised in Nanaimo, Bourgeois was introduced to the Ukrainian church and felt a strong connection to the culture and people. Despite not having any military experience, he volunteered in November to fight alongside the Ukrainian Army as a drone mechanic. His stepmother, Dawn Bourgeois, said he believed deeply in Ukraine's fight for freedom and there was no convincing him otherwise.

The family's grief is compounded by the fact that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is currently visiting Canada to seek support for Ukraine's ongoing struggle against Russia. James Bourgeois emphasized the importance of Canada's continued support and expressed his pride in his son's decision to serve. His body is expected to be repatriated in the coming weeks.

While the family struggles with their loss, they find some solace in knowing that Bourgeois followed his heart and was determined to help a country in need.
