Elon Musk's X is the AI community group chat

Elon Musk acquired Twitter with the intention of creating a "common digital town square" for civilization. However, four years later, the platform has evolved into a niche group chat for Silicon Valley's AI enthusiasts. This transformation is significant because many AI advancements are now discussed, explained, and sometimes debunked on X before gaining wider attention.

New developments in AI, such as model releases, research papers, and executive changes, are quickly shared on X, often before other sources pick up the story. For instance, when Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned and detailed his safety concerns, the post garnered over 100 million views. Similarly, another Anthropic employee expressed a 10% chance that AI could wipe out humanity within a decade, igniting a heated debate about the dangers of scaling AI.

The AI community, especially researchers from frontier AI labs, has long gathered on X to discuss technical progress. In 2025, Anthropic AI researcher Andrej Karpathy introduced the term "vibe coding" on X, which has since become a key term for understanding AI adoption trends. Even top executives, like Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, have joined the platform, posting in support of open AI models. Chinese AI labs are also leveraging X to expand their global reach.

X's live video features have made it a preferred platform for new tech shows, such as TBPN, Stabledash, and MTS Live, attracting an audience of highly engaged AI insiders. Although these shows don't achieve mainstream viewership, their niche audience is invaluable. In fact, TBPN was acquired by OpenAI for an estimated low hundreds of millions of dollars.

However, it's crucial to note that AI enthusiasts represent only a small fraction of X's overall user base, and X still faces stiff competition from Threads, which has significantly higher daily active users. Meta's Threads clocked in at 141.5 million daily active mobile users as of January 2026, surpassing X's 125 million users.

It's also important to remember that X's AI community was already influential before Musk's acquisition. However, Musk's takeover coincided with OpenAI's ChatGPT release, setting off a rapid AI race that was already well-connected through X. Many big tech CEOs, including Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, have since returned to X to share major AI announcements.

X itself is becoming an integral part of the AI ecosystem, as Musk's xAI acquired the platform, pledging to integrate their data, models, computing power, and distribution, with Grok, xAI's AI model, able to access X timelines and updates directly.
