Electricity generation falls 3.99% in July 2026 despite year-on-year growth – PURC

In July 2026, Ghana's electricity generation experienced a 3.99% decrease compared to the previous month, according to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). Despite the decline, overall generation was 6.20% higher than the same month in 2025, demonstrating continuous year-on-year growth. The decrease was largely due to seasonal factors, with demand lower during improved weather conditions.

Thermal power remained the dominant source, contributing 74.33% of total generation at 1,722.33 GWh, a 4.99% decline from June but an 11.25% increase year-on-year. Hydropower accounted for 25.01% of generation at 579.45 GWh, slightly down from June but still 7.41% lower than in 2025. Solar generation made up just 0.66% of total output at 15.35 GWh, a 13.76% decline from June but a 96.26% increase year-on-year.

Thermal plants, especially Karpower with 311.72 GWh, dominated the generation mix, while hydro generation was supplied primarily by Akosombo, Kpong, and Bui GS. The peak demand in July 2026 was 3,968 MW, a 6.61% increase year-on-year, but still below the annual peak in April. Installed capacity stood at 5,818 MW, with dependable capacity at 4,968 MW, resulting in a 988 MW capacity surplus and a reserve margin of 24.82%, exceeding the system adequacy benchmark of 18%.

While the generation mix showed the importance of fuel availability and thermal plant performance, the heavy reliance on thermal generation leaves Ghana's power sector vulnerable to fuel price volatility and supply risks. The PURC recommended increased investment in renewable energy to diversify the mix and enhance long-term sustainability.
